The world in the near future is a very different place. Some of us saw it coming.  War is over and peace has reigned for the longest period in recorded history.

The population is governed by very strict laws but global society has come unprecedentedly closer to equal rights for all. There is no sexual, racial, gender, class or age discrimination of any kind. That has been long forgotten.

The conception of all children is conducted in clinics by permission of the state. Sex and the consumption of alcohol or narcotics is punishable by death. There are proposals to make all religious practice illegal and all fiction in art is banned. The state sponsored drug ‘Citaloproxin’ is available to all citizens over 14.

Duke Vincenzo has been lax in enforcing the law of late and decides to sign his power over to Senator Angelo. Angelo is a woman of uncompromising vision, who immediately signs a series of executive orders re-enforcing the power of the state laws. The Duke, while disguising himself among his people to learn how they will respond to Angelo’s rule, becomes involved in a series of events directly caused by the changes in government.

Angelo, meanwhile, encounters more than she bargained for, in the figure of Isabella, a woman equally resolute in her dedication to her faith and sister to a man Angelo is going to execute for fathering a child illegally.

One of Shakespeare’s early Jacobean plays is clearly a comment on the loose morals of London in the early 17th Century and an ambiguous satire on the twisted laws and prejudices of the Court of King James I.

Suitable for 14+. Contains adult themes
